A general purpose cannon used by military and commercial ships of several nations. The earlier 4 pdr was longer due to the relatively weak black powder at that period and it was believed that the longer bore was needed to get a greater range.  Their reliability ensured long service in many different roles and therefore these cannon were also very popular with pirates.
